TMT (Treadmill Test)

TMT (Treadmill Test)

A Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as an Exercise Stress Test, is a diagnostic test that measures how well your heart functions under physical stress. It involves walking or running on a treadmill while your heart’s activity is monitored using an ECG. This test helps identify how your heart responds to increased workload and is a critical tool in diagnosing heart conditions.

Why is a TMT Important?

Your heart works harder during exercise, so a TMT can reveal problems that may not show up during rest. It is used to:

  • Detect blockages in the coronary arteries (coronary artery disease).
  • Assess the severity of chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath during activity.
  • Monitor heart health after a heart attack or cardiac procedure like angioplasty.
  • Check your heart’s response to physical activity if you have existing heart conditions.
  • Determine exercise tolerance and assess your fitness level.
When Should You Get a TMT?

Your doctor may recommend a TMT if you experience symptoms like chest discomfort, fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath, especially during physical activity. It’s also a routine test for individuals with risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease.

What Happens During a TMT?

A TMT typically takes about 30–45 minutes. Here’s what to expect:

  • Preparation: Electrodes will be attached to your chest to monitor your heart’s activity, and your blood pressure will be recorded.
  • Exercise: You’ll walk or jog on a treadmill, starting at a slow speed and gradually increasing in intensity.
  • Monitoring: Your heart rate, rhythm, and blood pressure will be continuously monitored.
  • Post-test: After the exercise, you’ll rest for a few minutes while your heart is monitored as it returns to normal.

The test is safe and supervised by trained professionals.
